Kensington Palace ‘can no longer be trusted’, claims a global news agency director, deepening the photo-editing crisis.
Phil Chetwynd, the global news director of Agence France-Press (AFP), hit out at the palace in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s The Media Show.
When asked if they were “a trusted source”, he responded: “No, absolutely not. Like with anything, when you’re let down by a source the bar is raised.”
It comes after controversy sparked by the revelation that Kate Middleton had edited a family photograph shared on behalf of the Cambridges on Mother’s Day leading to agencies pulling the shot and the Princess of Wales made a public apology.
Mr Chetwynd shared how agencies consulted together to decide how to react and requested the original photograph from the Palace, but he claimed they did not reply- so they killed the picture.
Removing photographs is “rare occurrence” and even rarer when it comes to removal on the basis of manipulation, Mr Chetwynd added.
He added: “The previous kills have been from the North Korean news agency or the Iranian news agency, just to give you some background and context.”

Prince William praises wife Kate after Princess of Wales apologised over picture editing furore
Prince William has paid tribute to his wife’s creativity – during a trip to a youth group in London.
William visited West, a new £12 million centre providing a wealth of facilities for eight to 18-year-olds, and quizzed children about their phone habits.
Sitting down with a group working on a mental health project, he asked: “How much time do you spend on your phone a day?” adding with a laugh, “We can all be honest about this.”
When one teenage girl said 15 hours, he replied: “Fifteen hours, that’s quite a lot – I bet you feel better coming here.”

Comment – Kate Middleton is the latest victim of the ‘Streisand effect’
The Princess of Wales has been out of public view since she had abdominal surgery two months ago. Understandably, for someone recovering from major surgery, she has been keeping a low profile and has suspended all her public duties.
The flames of conspiracy were damped on Sunday when Kensington Palace issued the first official photo of Kate since her surgery, happily posing with her three children on Mother’s Day. However, the abatement in speculation was only temporary. Later that same day, four international news agencies took the significant step of pulling the photo and advising clients not to use it over concerns that the image had been doctored. The dramatic-sounding “kill” notices came after royal aficionados noticed a number of inconsistencies which suggested that the image had been edited. Without clarification from Kensington Palace, the news agencies were left with little choice but to withdraw the picture. The rumour mill whirred into action once more.
